About blocked pores and blackheads

Blackheads form when dead skin cells and oil collect and form small bumps on the opening of skin’s hair follicles. This can happen when there is excess oil production, skin congestion, a hormonal change, environmental pollution or make up residue.

Blocked pores can be open (blackheads where they appear black/brown due to oxidization or air exposure), closed (whiteheads) or if inflamed / infected can in extreme cases cause acne.

Sufferers should avoid picking the affected area or squeezing the area as this can damage the skin layer and leave a permanent scar.

What causes blocked pores and blackheads?

Generally the more oil an individual’s skin produces, the more the chance of pores becoming blocked.

Blackheads form when a clog or plug develops in the opening of hair follicles in the skin. Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil, called sebum, helps keep your skin soft. Dead skin cells and oils collect in the opening to the skin follicle, producing a bump called a comedo.

How skin treatments work

Treatments depend on the severity of the skin condition and can include a combination of a mild formulation of lactic and glycolic peels as well as a cocktail of vitamins to provide a noticeable refreshed, radiant complexion (recommend a series of six treatments for optimum results).

Our microdermabrasion plus treatment removes dead skin cells, smoothing the skin’s surface. Extractions remove blackheads and LED light therapy results in skin healing and collagen production. Discuss your individual requirements with our Clinica Therapists to evaluate the best option/s for you.
