Skin pigment is called Melanin. When skin cells are damaged, cell production of melanin is impacted. Melasma causes abnormal pigmentation on sun exposed areas of the face and can be a result of side effects from pregnancy related hormones and oral contraceptives. Treating Melasma involves sun protection, skin care and skin treatments including microdermabrasion plus, pigmentation cosmetic grade peels, collagen induction therapy or IPL/Laser rejuvenation (e.g. for white spots that appear on the back of the hands or face).
Melasma occurs when pigment producing cells in the skin produce too much pigment in certain areas of the skin. This causes brown age spots and freckles however Melasma patches can be larger. Melasma is mainly caused by: ultraviolet, visible light, or infrared (heat) light; and hormones. Ultraviolet and infrared radiation from the sun are key in making melasma worse. A severe Vitamin B12 deficiency has also been attributed to causing hyperpigmentation and Melasma.
Skin treatments work to collapse pigment cells in the dark spots and trigger cellular rejuvenation. Treating Melasma involves skin treatments such as the ASAP microdermabrasion plus medi facial, pigmentation cosmetic grade peels, collagen induction therapy/skinb needling or IPL/Laser rejuvenation (e.g. for white spots that appear on the back of the hands or face).

An IPL treatment brings great benefits with little to no risk or adverse reactions. In an IPL treatment for melasma, the light will penetrate into the deep layers of the skin. The heat will then destroy the cells with an excess of melanin and force the body to naturally produce new, healthy ones.
